How to Not Get Elected

I dunno why exactly, but I’ve been ruminating on the results of the Iowa GOP caucus.  I guess it’s in part because I’ve actually attended an Iowa caucus (see  I Caucus, Too November, 23, 2007), and in part, because I’m fascinated by the fact that Romney won/lost this caucus after spending only $1,642 per vote cast in his favor. My preliminary conclusion is that there’s a lot of people including a bunch of really conservative Iowans who are pretty well convinced that Anyone But Mitt (ABM) would be a far better candidate.  Go figure. Ok, this may be too clever by half, but the parallels between this caucus and the 1972 Democratic caucus that I attended in a...

Don’t Vote, It Only Encourages Them.

If I could emulate the primal scream that ran Howard Dean out of the Democratic primary last time around, I would.  I can’t stand it any more. I know it’s not smart to talk about politics in polite company, but I just can’t stop myself.  I watched the GOP primary debates for the same reason that a moth is attracted to light.  I did it even though I knew it would cause me great mental anguish.  Two thoughts assaulted me as I watched the other night:  1)  This is the best we have to offer?  In a country of three hundred million, half of which are of the republican persuasion…this is our best?  Yikes!  2) Has any of this gaggle ever had an original...

No Matter What it Costs

The symbol you see here is a Caduceus which is an icon adopted by most commercial interests in the health care industry.  The Asclepius, which is pretty much the same except for it’s derivation and the fact that it only has one snake, is representative of most health care professionals…doctors, nurses, etc.  Interestingly there is no symbol that represents the most important constituency of the health care industry…the consumers…me and you.  The derivation of each symbol, and how it came to represent the various factions (which I will not bore you with) makes about as much sense as how we consume and pay for health care in the United States...

Dream On

Sadly for our country, the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act was defeated in the Senate last week.  No, it actually wasn’t defeated, because it never came up for a vote.  There were fifty two senators who wanted to pass this important piece of legislation but couldn’t because of the intransigence of a few who refused to allow debate to be ended and a vote taken.  There’s that nasty Senate Rule 22 again. For those of you who haven’t followed closely, this is all about defining a process to deal with the children of illegal immigrants who were brought into this country by their parents.  I know, I know… some of you (and many...

It’s Gotta Get Better Than This

Most of you know that I am of the progressive persuasion politically.  It would even be fair to use the L(iberal) word about me, but this is not about partisan politics or political ideology.  This is about chaos in our political institutions.  It is chaos that is devolving to the level of a jejune food fight, and I’m disgusted.  I’m talking about the United States Senate, of course.  I know there are substantial differences in the agendas of the respective parties, and yes, I get it that getting and staying in power is a critical objective of all political animals….but what about the business of the people, what about the needs of the country, and what...

I’m Mad as Hell….

Eddie Chiles, the now deceased iconic Texas oil man and onetime owner of the Texas Rangers, didn’t say it first, but he excited public attention by a series of radio ads that were introduced by his signature line, “I’m Eddie Chiles. and I’m mad as hell”.  Ultimately there arose a public response from some of the great unwashed in the form of bumper stickers that read, “I’m mad too, Eddie”.  It was never clear to me exactly what everyone was mad about, but I got a pretty good idea from other of his rhetoric which complained of “wild government spending”, “runaway regulation”, and even “tyrannical bureaucracy”.  Sound familiar?  He even threw in that his...
